This week’s question covers ensuring the correct fit.

Dear G & H experts,

I would like to ask you about the size of the suit that I have ordered from the online store (Look 7). I am about 184 cm in height and the 42 (52) size is correct for my body.

I have ordered the 42 Long — is this the proper size for me or should I have ordered the 42 Regular? The length from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff in my other suits is about 66 cm. Considering the table that you give about jacket measurements, I think that the 42 Long is a bit long in the sleeves for me.

Do you think that I have taken the wrong decision when I chose to order the 42 Long instead of 42 Regular?

Yours faithfully,

George

Dear George,

The wonderful thing about people is that they are all very different shapes. We base our ready to wear line on traditional industry standards to try and ensure the best overall fit possible, however there will always be some people who fall outside these traditional standards. Some people have long bodies and average arms, or average body lengths and long arms, and people who fall into these categories are difficult to fit.

In your case I would suggest that you ask someone to help you measure from the centre of your back to where you want your cuff hem to sit – please see our “how to measure” guide for further help. If you still think you have ordered the wrong size, please contact us.

I would generally advise you to order the correct size for your centre back (body) and then have the sleeves shortened to your correct length. If you require fitting please contact one of our stores, or a reputable tailor who will be able to help you further.

To ensure the perfect fit, our Made to Measure service offers a greater degree of flexibility in sizing as well as the chance to customise garments to your exact requirements.

Or for the ultimate sartorial investment, choose our Bespoke service where your suit will be expertly hand-crafted by our world-renowned tailors. This is exclusively available from our No. 1 Savile Row store, unless notified in advance where we will come to you by appointment.
